Project 4 | Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Design
Type| Systems Engineering
Software | SolidWorks, Microsoft EXCEL
Description
In this project, the design of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is delivered under the principles of the NASA Project Lifecycle. The UAV was designed by a team of five engineers over the course of eight months, and thoroughly evaluated by industry experts at SpaceX, NASA, and Northrop Grumman. The project showcases the Critical Design Review, which includes the concept of operation, subsystem design, subsystem requirements, risk assessments, and other fundamentals of systems engineering.
Approach
Team Management
As the team leader for the Project, my approach focused on effective communication, strategic thinking, and iterative decision-making. I also prioritized risk management and adaptability, allowing us to navigate any challenges that arose during the project lifecycle. To ensure my team functioned at a high capacity, I implemented effective leadership methods to guide them in the right direction. This approach ensured that everyone understood their roles and responsibilities, leading to improved communication and coordination.
Computer Aided Design (CAD) Model
Project Management
To manage the project effectively, I utilized Microsoft Excel to keep track of deliverables, project progress, and team members’ work. Excel allowed for the creation of task lists, project schedules, and a record of the status of deliverables. Using this software ensured that the project stayed on track, and was completed in a reasonable amount of time.
Overview
The project intent was to design a Search and Rescue Unmanned Aerial Vehicle to act as a first responder during a wildfire event. Search and Rescue Aircraft System (SARAS) will search for and rescue victims that were unable to evacuate wildfire zones due to the inability to escape high temperatures, flames, and dense smoke. SARAS is designed to withstand high temperature environments and the ability to access areas that are difficult to reach.
